Pints for Pups

Parvovirus in puppies

Parvo destroys the gut lining and bone marrow. Why some puppies get plasma, and what the trials found.

What it is

Canine parvovirus attacks rapidly dividing cells: the intestinal lining and the bone marrow. Unvaccinated puppies get severe vomiting and bloody diarrhea, lose protein and fluid, and their white cell count crashes, leaving them open to bacterial infection from their own gut. With intensive care most survive; without it, most don't.

Why plasma

Puppies with parvo lose a lot of protein through the damaged gut, and plasma has been used to replace it and to supply antibodies. The evidence for antibody-rich "immune plasma" is mixed: a randomized trial of a single dose found no clear benefit,1 and a 2020 trial of hyperimmune plasma likewise found no improvement in survival or hospital time.2 Plasma is still used case by case for puppies with dangerously low protein. Vaccination remains the thing that actually prevents this disease.

How you can help

Dogs with these conditions survive because another dog's owner signed up. Check in one minute if your dog can donate, find a blood bank near you, or join the pack and share this page.
